5 Quick Wins to Improve Your Website (Without a Redesign)
After 15+ years building websites, I can confidently say there are five things your team can fix tomorrow that will instantly give your site a lift — without needing a redesign, a dev, or a miracle.
-
Use only one H1 per page.
Make sure each page has a single, clear<h1>
that reflects your page’s purpose. Use<h2>
and<h3>
for structure. Google and your users both prefer tidy hierarchy. -
Convert images to WebP.
WebP files load faster and are better for performance. Resize them before uploading — don’t leave it to your CMS to scale down massive JPEGs in the browser. -
Clean up your HTML paste-ins.
If you're copying from Word, email, or Notion — paste into Notepad first. Or better yet, ask ChatGPT to "clean this HTML for web". Your site (and your visitors) will thank you. -
Match your Page Title & Meta Description to your Heading.
Keep them short (under 60 and 160 characters), meaningful, and aligned with your page’s actual message. This helps with search rankings *and* click-throughs. -
Rename and describe your images.
Instead ofIMG_0001.jpg
, useoak-tree-webinar.webp
plus add a relevant alternative text like "Oak tree branding visual from June webinar.".
It is a 2-minute habit with long-term SEO benefit.
You don’t need a redesign to get results — just better habits. Next time you publish a page or article, try all five of these. You'll spot the difference in speed, visibility, and how little time you waste cleaning up after your CMS.
